He was born in 1957 in Bratislava. He graduated from a secondary agricultural-technical school and studied acting at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, majoring in speech technology and later stage speech and artistic performance.
After completing his university studies, he began performing on the stage of the SND Drama Theatre in 1981. He lectures on the theory of stage speech and artistic performance at the Academy of Performing Arts. In addition to acting, poetry recitation and teaching, Štefan Bučko also works as a presenter of cultural and social programmes. He has worked in dubbing, television and radio.
In 1998, he was a member and, until 2010, chairman of the Council of Slovak Television (STV). He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation for the Support of the Catholic University in Ružomberok and was a laureate of the Fra Angelica Award of the Council of the Bishops' Conference of Slovakia for Science, Education and Culture for his personal contribution to Christian values in culture in Slovakia.
He was the director of the SND Drama Theatre from 2008 to 2010. His debut poetry collection, The Anticipated Stays in the Shadows, was published in 2011 and reissued in 2013.

2008 - Fra Angelico Award of the KBS Council for Education, Science and Culture
2013 - Crystal Rose - the highest Czechoslovak award for a lifetime of masterful interpretation and dissemination of poetry
2015 - Literary Fund Award for the character of Adam in the production of the play The Radiation of Fatherhood
